The island of Sipan near Dubrovnik is one of many, small, so called ‘Elaphiti’ islands. Because of its relief, in the ancient time the Sipan was called ‘Tauris’ (bull) or ‘Elafit’ (deer). Even in time of Dubrovnik Republic, the island was recognized as a place for peaceful vacation, and well known by its beauty and silence. That’s the reason why there are 44 palaces, and 32 churches, all built in the period from VII to XVI century. Among them the most distinguished is the fort/church St. Spirit, the palace of the family Skocibuha, small church St. Peter, and summer house of Dubrovnik’s dukes.
On the island there are two main villages: the bigger one is called Sipanska Luka (250 inhabitants) and the smaller one is called Sudjuradj (150 inhabitants). From Sudjuradj’s port, the island is connected with Dubrovnik daily by catamaran, ferry, small boats. The distance between the island and Dubrovnik is about 1 hour. Two villages are connected by local bus-line.
Rich history of the island, so many interesting stories and myths, crystal clear sea, beaches and hidden bays, thick pine-tree woods, quite summer nights, create perfect ambiance for your escape from urban stressful life. Meet Sipanska Luka and its inhabitants – meet Sipan!
